Boats are in the blood and in the family

  • Having virtually been born on a boat, and from toddling age actively involved in the repairing, painting, cleaning of bilges and sailing various family boats, it is not surprising that Ted Spears has made his career in the Marine Industry.
  • His extensive practical experience was gained from developing a small creek side works into a yard with a large staff building yachts and small craft up to 30 metres in length. The yards’ own range of steel sailing craft known as Bay Class Yachts was designed by Ted. The yard also re-fitted and repaired all types of craft on a covered slipway.
  • Ted and his late brother commenced operating the boatyard at Conyer in North Kent in the mid 70’s, and Ted’s responsibilities were mainly design and production.
  • In 1995 Ted started practicing as a Marine Surveyor undertaking Pre-Purchase and Insurance Surveys plus claims work for various Insurance Companies. Ted studied at Southampton Institute in 1996 and gained a diploma in Marine Surveying.
  • Since that time Ted has undertaken several Management and Consultancy Projects. In addition to this, Ted takes an active role within his son’s boat building company North Quay Marine, in which his daughter is also involved. It handles the production of cedar/epoxy vessels usually of Ted’s design, up to 9 metres or so in length. Ted’s son Ewan together with his boat building is learning the ropes to become a Marine Surveyor.
  • The latest family project is an 18 metre Dutch Barge, which is undergoing a major refit including a new wheelhouse and internal alterations.
